Adrenal medulla autografts in Parkinson's disease: a proposed mechanism of action.
نویسنده
چکیده
Concepts emerging from experimental manipulations of neurobiological systems in vivo and in vitro may provide explanations for some clinical observations following adrenal medulla autografting in patients with Parkinson's disease. These concepts are reviewed, and a proposed mechanism of action of adrenal autografts in Parkinson's disease is advanced.

Neural Transplantation as a Strategy for Recovery of CNS Functions
Transplants of neural tissue have been used for nearly 100 years in order to clarify the mechanisms that underlie development and regeneration of the nervous system. With reports from Sweden and Mexico that autografts of adrenal medulla produce at least transient and perhaps dramatic improvement in patients severly disabled by Parkinson's disease, the techniques of neural transplantation have ...
متن کاملAdrenal medulla grafts enhance functional activity of the striatal dopamine system following substantia nigra lesions.
Adrenal medulla grafts in the lateral ventricle reduce the behavioral manifestations of striatal dopamine depletion in an animal model of Parkinson's disease. Using microdialysis in freely moving rats, the present experiments determined that dopamine was not detectable in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). However, adrenal medulla grafts were associated with an increase in dopamine turnover and ampheta...
متن کاملCells of the sympathoadrenal lineage: biological properties as donor tissue for cell-replacement therapies for Parkinson's disease.
Sympathoadrenal (SA) cell lineage encompasses neural crest derivatives such as sympathetic neurons, small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells of sympathetic ganglia and adrenal medulla, and chromaffin cells of adrenal medulla and extra-adrenal paraganglia. SA autografts have been used for transplantation in Parkinson's disease (PD) for three reasons: (i) as autologous donor tissue avoids graft re...
متن کاملAdrenal Medullary Autografts in Anterior Eye Chamber, Lateral Ventricle and Striatum of Adult Rats: A Long Term Study
The neurobiological basis for the short-term recovery in Parkinson's patients and experimental animals grafted with adrenal medulla is not yet clear. Structural details of the grafted chromaffin cells are also not available. In the present study, autografts of adrenal medulla in the anterior eye chamber, lateral ventricle and striatum of adult rats were studied for 360 days. Though a large numb...
متن کاملEffects of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes on Micro-Anatomical Changes of Adrenal Gland in Male Wistar Rats
Background & Aims: Changing the hormonal output of endocrine glands, diabetes leads to the occurrence of secondary metabolic disorders. Neuropathy, on the other hand, is the most common neurological complication of diabetes which affects the neuroendocrine system, in addition to peripheral and autonomic nervous system, contributing to exacerbation of disease severity. In this line, the present ...
